Relying on Others

This was one of the biggest problems for me as someone with moderate anxiety. Relying on other to talk to about your mental health is so difficult. For years, mental health has been a “taboo” subject. We were scolded for talking about it. We were told to not acknowledge what was going on with us. When I started going to therapy, my dad was not very happy about it. He comes from the generation where you keep you mental health problems bottled up inside. You don’t show it, you don’t talk about it, then is it really even there?

I come from the generation where are starting to talk about mental health more and more. We acknowledge and know that people have problems in their life that they can’t control. Mental health problems, whether it be depression, anxiety, panic disorders, or any other mental health illness is something that needs to be known and dealt with. That’s why there are services like Blue fever that are free and willing to help people with their mental health problems. Blue fever is a text service that using hashtags you are able to text with them and get links and videos and even vent so that you are able to improve your mental health.

For many years I found it hard to talk to others about what I was dealing with. Everyday, consistently, I was having thoughts about myself that were self deprecating and abusive. It wasn’t until I told my mom what was going on that I was truly able to let go of all that pain. I am not saying that I was automatically cured of my depression. I know that I will never be “cured”, but I was able to get 1) some relief from all the pain that I had felt, and 2) the support and advice that I need to confront my illness head on.

It is important to talk to people. Not only so that you can let out what you are feeling, but so that others can know to either help you through what you are dealing with so that you know you are not alone, but also they might be dealing with the same thing. It is all about showing who you are. Be transparent. Admit that there is a problem with how you are feeling and know that you aren’t alone in it.
